So I had a "Making dresses for girls in Haiti" Party, and it was a total FLOP. But I am grateful that Larissa came! :) And for the loaning of a machine Ashleigh. As for the rest of you . . . :)-
So here is how they turned out. After you got the rythm down you could make one in about 20 min. That was even making your own bias tape! :) We made 11 or so, and my sister also made about that many - so regardless, they will be going to great use! Oh and thank you Kelli and Amy for the donations of Material. And Larissa you should be able to see the pillowcases that were finished, thanks for bringing those.
And thanks for the Fab Modeling Job Larissa! My sis took some pics of my kids wearing them. I will have to get those from her!
Larissa was a real trooper. She put her BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS (ok there were no tears) into this! As is evident by her sewing machine eating through her finger! Poor dear!
Anyways, if you have wanted to try to sew something simple - these really are. If you are interested, I am going to attempt a step by step for you. It is a great way to practice sewing .:)
STEP ONE: take a pillowcase, and the OPEN END is going to be the
BOTTOM already hemmed part of the dress. You can use a small plate or just free hand a cut out
for the "arm holes".
STEP TWO: cut along the top or "Neck"
STEP THREE A: Make Bias Tape (or buy it already made from the store) (I was given a lot of material - so we made some of our own pillowcases (takes longer) and bias tape).
To MAKE BIAS TAPE: Cut the fabric at a 45 degree angle (this allows the material to bend around the arm holes easier.)
Three B : Then cut two inches away from that line so you have a two inch strip. Feed it into a bias tape helper. (I got it for $3 with my 40% off coupon. You CAN just iron it yourself - but this little tool makes it a BREEZE.)
It helps to feed an angled end through - easier to grab.
It is hard to tell with this material, but you want it RIGHT (prettiest) side DOWN on the ironing board.
Simply pull through and iron.
You will need to connect at least 2 strips together, simply put RIGHT sides TOGETHER and sew a straight line *NOT at an angle* you will now cut the angle off so it is square.
STEP FOUR: Sew a "casing" for the elastic. Fold the NECK back and again so that there is a "tunnel" to put your elastic through. Sew. I am holding the elastic to show how much wider the "tunnel" needs to be than the elastic. You can use ANY size really.
After you have sewn that line (*remember to back stitch at the beginning and end so it doesn't come undone.) Feed your elastic through the "tunnel" and sew one end of the elastic - backstitching several times.
Pull your elastic an push the material so that it bunches slightly, sew down the other end and cut elastic. The front should now look like this:
Repeat for the back of the dress.
STEP FIVE: Sew on your Bias Tape. To do this you first need a finished end. So fold in the top and sew - then sew for about 10 inches.
Now sew the bias tape to the "arm holes" starting at the top where the elastic was sewn in,
and working all the way around the arm to the back neck, ending at the other elastic of the BACK but sewing just the bias tape for another 10 inches so that the bow may be tied. End as you began - tuck in the ends *measure and cut off extra*.
AS YOU DO THIS THE BIAS TAPE SHOULD WRAP AROUND THE EDGE *to prevent fraying* You will be folding the Bias tape IN HALF so that one folded edge is under the pillowcase and the other is on top. Sew pretty close to the inside edge of the bias tape. But try to have the edge of the pillowcase right up in the fold of the bias tape.
REPEAT FOR BOTH ARM HOLES.
Now you are done!!!!
The Bias tape is to make little Ties at the top of the shoulders. I forgot to hold up one that I did a take a picture - here is one that my sister did though!
If you would LIKE to add a pocket . . . we did because my sister has been to Africa and there are areas that the Men will steal all the food that is handed out and then sell it. So, we put a pocket so the girls could hide food from them if they got some. SAD I know.
For the pocket just make sure you *Don't sew the pillowcase together, only have ONE layer. Pin a pocket and sew along the sides and bottom. It would be easiest to cut a pocket, then IRON a 1/4 - 1/2 inch edge under, then sew over top. You may choose to zig zag the pocket after you cut it out all around to prevent fraying. THEN IRON and sew.
The TOP would need a DOUBLE fold because it is most used. :)
